One of two family members charged in Regina’s fifth murder of 2020 has been sentenced to eight years in prison.
Michael Douglas Morrissette, 22, initially was charged with second-degree murder in connection with the killing of David Anderson on March 5, 2020.
Morrissette appeared in Regina Court of Queen’s Bench on Friday and pleaded guilty to the lesser included offence of manslaughter.
He was sentenced to eight years in prison minus time served — 681 days with enhanced credit — for a total of 2,239 days. Justice Catherine Dawson added a recommendation that Morrissette should serve some of his sentence in a psychiatric facility.
The Wawota man also was ordered to submit a DNA sample and was given a 10-year firearms prohibition.
Morrissette’s father, 43-year-old Michael Dennis Morrissette, also is charged with second-degree murder in connection with Anderson’s death. The elder Morrissette is expected in court June 21.
On March 5 of last year, officers were sent to the 1400 block of Sixth Avenue for a report of an injured man, who was later identified as Anderson. Paramedics took the 36-year-old to hospital, where he died.
