The Canadian Football League board of governors has one choice this coming Monday, and that is voting ‘yes’ to playing football starting Aug. 5 as planned.
The provincial reopening plans that are being presented show a significant number of fans will be allowed in a significant number of stadiums if Ontario pro teams get their way in negotiations with that government. And they should get approval for large crowds before August.
Fan attendance was a main hurdle to clear when commissioner Randy Ambrosie announced the projected start date of Aug. 5.
Some believe another delay is coming or that the fans are being suckered into being optimistic like we were last year.
And that’s why I’d love this vote, if it is not unanimous, to be public so we can all see which owner clearly doesn’t have the league’s best interest in mind. Then they can explain why to the fans rather than hide behind Ambrosie and let him take the shots.
It should be a great news day for the CFL on Monday, but I also understand the skepticism. The league hasn’t exactly given fans confidence it’ll do everything possible to get back on the field.
