The Regina Police Service responded to a call of a man threatening someone with a knife — only to end up arresting someone else.
On Tuesday around 5:15 p.m., officers were dispatched to the area of Wascana Street and Fourth Avenue in North Central after getting reports of a weapons offence involving a man who was threatening another man with a knife.
Police ended up finding someone in the 1000 block of Pasqua Street who matched the description of the suspect they were looking for.
An officer confronted the man in an attempt to detain him before the suspect produced a knife from his waistband and supposedly waved it towards the officer.
According to the release, the officer then gave the suspect direction to drop the knife before the suspect allegedly threw the knife towards the officer, missing him in the process.
The man was then taken into custody without further incident.
The police were then able to determine that the man who they had confronted was not the suspect from the original report.
A 30-year-old man is charged with assault on a peace officer while carrying a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and carrying a concealed weapon.
He will make his first appearance on these charges in court on Wednesday.
The original report of a weapons offence is still under investigation. Anyone with information that could help in this investigation is asked to contact the Regina Police Service at 306-777-6500 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
