FLORENCE, Italy — Mohammed Ahmed and Justyn Knight are shaping up to be a powerful 1-2 punch for Canada in the 5,000 metres at the Tokyo Olympics.
Ahmed, from Hamilton, raced to bronze in the 5,000 at the Golden Gala Diamond League meet on Thursday, while Toronto’s Knight shaved 18 seconds off his personal best time to finish fifth.
Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigsten won gold in 12 minutes 48.45 seconds, Ethiopia’s Hagos Gebrhiwet was second in 12:49.02 while Ahmed, the 2019 world bronze medallist in the event, ran 12.50.12.
Knight finished in 12.51.93, making him the second-fastest North American in the event’s history. Ahmed holds the North American record at 12:47.20, set last July in Portland.
Gabriela DeBues-Stafford of Toronto was fourth in the women’s 1,500 in a season’s best 4:00.46.
