The number of active COVID-19 cases being reported in Saskatchewan has fallen below 900 for the first time since early November.
The Ministry of Health said Friday there were 899 active cases in the province. That’s the lowest that figure has been since it was 877 on Nov. 5.
The ministry reported 81 new COVID cases, along with 98 recoveries and one death. An individual in the 80-and-over age group from the Saskatoon area is the 554th Saskatchewan resident to die as a result of the virus.
There were 15,212 doses of COVID vaccine administered in the province Thursday, including 11,585 second shots. That increased the number of people considered fully vaccinated to 178,409.
A look at the numbers
The new cases, plus 15 cases that were tested out of province, increased Saskatchewan’s total since last March to 47,764.
The latest cases were reported in the Saskatoon (17), Regina (14), north-west (13), north-central (seven), southwest (seven), south-central (seven), far northeast (four), far northwest (three), northeast (three), central-east (three) and southeast (two) zones. One case is pending residence details.
The seven-day average of new COVID cases fell to 78, or 6.4 per 100,000 population. That number hasn’t been that low since it was 78 on Nov. 5.
To date, 11,504 cases of variants of concern have been identified by screening in Saskatchewan. The Regina region has registered the most variant cases, with 4,721.
There have been 46,311 recoveries reported in the province so far.
The 104 hospitalizations due to COVID in the province include 17 intensive care patients. There are six ICU cases in the Saskatoon region, four in each of the Regina and north-central regions, and one in each of the northwest, central-east and southwest areas.
The 2,165 COVID tests done in Saskatchewan on Thursday hiked the province’s total to date to 884,309.
Vaccination update
So far, 860,651 vaccinations have been done in the province. Second doses have exceeded first doses for 12 straight days.
The latest shots were given in the Saskatoon (3,959), Regina (3,946), southeast (1,278), central-east (1,069), north-central (987), northeast (710), central-west (669), northwest (666), south-central (623), far northeast (414), southwest (396), far northwest (188) and far north-central (12) zones.
The hometowns of 295 recipients are still being determined.
The ministry said 66 per cent of those 12 and over have received their first dose. The threshold to remove the remaining public health measures is 70 per cent of that age group.
