Saskatchewan reported Monday the lowest single-day total of new COVID-19 cases in 2021.
There were 55 new cases announced, the fewest since the province reported 37 cases on Nov. 4. The previous low for 2021 was the 56 new cases reported on Feb. 24.
The number of active cases fell to 774, the lowest that number has been since it was 739 on Oct. 31.
And the seven-day average of new cases dropped to 76 or 6.2 per 100,000 people — its lowest mark since it was 71 (or 5.9 per 100,000 population) on Nov. 4.
The Ministry of Health also reported the death of a person in the 80-and-over age group who lived in the Saskatoon region. They’re the 556th Saskatchewan resident to die as a result of the virus.
There were 9,928 vaccinations done in the latest reporting period, but only 1,709 were first doses. That left Saskatchewan one percentage short of reaching the vaccination threshold for Step Three of the government’s Re-Opening Roadmap.
So far, 69 per cent of Saskatchewan residents aged 18 and up have received a first dose of a COVID vaccine. As soon as 70 per cent of that age group gets a shot, the provincial government will remove most public health measures.
Two other measures — indoor masking and limits on gathering sizes — will be lifted as soon as 70 per cent of people aged 12 and over get a first dose. As of Monday, 67 per cent of people in that age group had been vaccinated.
