Photo radar fines are funding another 112 traffic safety initiatives in Saskatchewan.
On Monday, the Saskatchewan government said 112 projects in 108 communities are to receive money through the Provincial Traffic Safety Fund.
Twice a year, the fund gives grants to communities using a portion of the proceeds derived from photo radar locations in the province.
This year’s grants total $1.4 million and range from $400 for traffic signs in the village of Manitou Beach to $68,909 for warning lights in North Battleford.
To qualify for a grant, traffic safety initiatives have to focus on a priority area set out by the fund. Those areas include speeding, impaired driving, distracted driving, occupant protection and intersection safety.
Applications are evaluated by a committee comprising representatives from the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association, the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities, the Prince Albert Grand Council, the Saskatchewan Association of Chiefs of Police, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Highways and SGI.
The next round of applications opens Thursday, with a deadline of Sept. 30. More information can be found here.
