It’s safe to say that mosquitoes have been particularly bad as of late — so much so that the City of Regina says the pest problem has been historic.
According to data released by the city, the month of June saw more mosquitoes caught in city traps than ever before in the month of June.
“Our current average is 293 mosquitoes per trap, while the 10-year average is 46 mosquitoes per trap and the historical average is 37 per trap,” said Ryan Johnston of the City of Regina. “So we are quite a bit over.
“(It’s) not the highest we’ve ever been on a yearly basis, but it is definitely the highest we’ve been in June.
“We have had a huge rainfall event, followed by extremely warm weather which has basically created the perfect storm for mosquitoes.”
The city started keeping mosquito count records in 1986.
Crews have been apply a product called VectoBac, an all-natural product that comes in pellet form, to some bodies of water in the city that contain mosquito larvae.
The city reported there were a total of 3,511 mosquitoes caught from June 28 to July 2, over 3,400 more than the same time period the year prior.
Johnston hopes July won’t follow in last month’s trend.
“I’d like to remind homeowners to make sure they are doing their part,” he said. “Please have a look in your yard, empty any containers with standing water and make sure the gutters are clean and that they aren’t holding any water.
“If everyone does their part, it’s going to be a lot better.”
