A Saskatchewan RCMP officer has been charged with unauthorized possession of a restricted firearm.
The charge was laid after Saskatchewan RCMP received information in late January that led the Mounties to conduct a Canadian Firearms Registry check on the officer.
The RCMP says the check revealed the officer’s personal firearms licence was expired, meaning it was illegal for him to have the .22-calibre pistol he owned. The weapon was not related to the officer’s law enforcement duties, as a personal firearms licence is not required for on-duty possession of a firearm under the RCMP Act.
The officer, who was serving at the Waskesiu RCMP detachment at the time, willingly surrendered the weapon.
Saskatchewan RCMP’s North District requested a statutory investigation into the situation which led to the single charge being laid against Rene Giroux on June 30.
Giroux is scheduled to appear in Montreal Lake Cree Nation Court on Sept. 2 at 10 a.m.
He remains on active duty while an internal code of conduct review is underway, the RCMP said. Further information is unavailable as the matter is both before the courts and the subject of an internal review by the police body.
