A fire at an industrial linen-cleaning plant in Regina on Sunday was caused by spontaneous combustion.
Regina Fire and Protective Services responded to the blaze at the facility on Stanley Dethridge Bay in the Ross Industrial Park area at 2 a.m. The fire department didn’t identify the business, but K-Bro Linen Systems is on that street.
In a media release Thursday, the department said effective alarm and sprinkler systems at the site helped contain the fire.
“We only average a couple of these fires a year that are deemed spontaneous combustion,” Fire Chief Layne Jackson said in the release. “Our investigators determined this fire was caused by spontaneous combustion of laundered material contaminated with oil-based organic products.”
The fire department urged industrial business owners and operators to make sure their fire and safety systems are inspected annually and serviced by a licensed technician.
It also reminded residents to launder and dry all rags that are used to apply oil-based organic products, such as certain wood-finishing products and cooking oils, before discarding them or folding and storing them.
