According to a witness, a vehicle going northbound on Highway 11 caused a commotion on Thursday.
Brittany, who asked us not to use her last name, was driving home from work when she noticed the vehicle and felt something was very wrong.
“At first I was kind of concerned,” Brittany said. “There was a vehicle in front of me, and then a truck in front of them, and they were swerving all over the road. So me and the car kind of slowed down because we thought they were having vehicle problems.
“Then I started just getting a really bad gut feeling and nervous because this person was cutting semis off, cutting vehicles off, and a bunch of us were slowing down and trying to stay behind. They were swerving all over the road…. It just got really scary with how he was driving in the ditch. He would signal light to pull over, and then gun it across both lanes and cut people off. It was just the scariest crazy driving I’ve ever witnessed.”
Brittany explained she panicked, not knowing if she should call the police or just let the matter go.
“I finally called 911 because they nearly hit me off the road as well,” Brittany said. “The RCMP from Lumsden was dispatched, and they caught him.
“They called me later on to let me know that he was impaired.”
Mounties later told Brittany the driver blew .25.
“I was told by the cops later on that there were three people in there,” Brittany said. “The cop said he didn’t even really have to pull them over, they pulled over on their own and someone got out of the vehicle. When he approached the gentleman on the side of the road it was just a hitchhiker, and he was like, ‘Man, that driver is drunk,’ then he went to the occupants in the vehicle… and (the driver) will be served his court papers.”
It was relayed to Brittany by the cops that another person also called in to report the impaired driver.
“I’m really glad I called and that I didn’t just let it go,” Brittany said. “That person probably could have killed someone and was going to go on to a single lane highway. That person was so hammered. They couldn’t even see the road.”
If you see something suspicious while driving, pull over and call 9-1-1.
We have a call in with police for more information.
