Saskatchewan RCMP are launching an investigation into a death that may have happened 47 years ago at a northern school for children, referred to by police as a residential school.
The historical case unit is looking into the circumstance which potentially happened at Timber Bay Children’s Home in 1974, located roughly 120 kilometres north of Prince Albert.
“This is a historical complaint – dating back decades. I can’t imagine how difficult it must be for someone to come forward and speak with police after so much time has passed,” Supt. Vince Foy said in a media release.
Officers heard a complaint from a person on Oct. 21, 2020, but were unable to get a recorded statement until COVID-19 restrictions eased on July 8. The investigation is in its early stages and no charges have been laid.
“With the complaint being historical in nature, part of the investigative process will be to meet with multiple individuals in several communities. Investigators will listen to those who choose to come forward and will follow up on any information received,” Foy added.
RCMP are encouraging anyone with information to call 310-RCMP to get in contact with Saskatchewan RCMP historical case unit investigators or contact their local detachment or police service.
The school doesn’t have status as a residential school since it wasn’t directly government-operated, but Mounties are calling this the only investigation on a residential school by the historical case unit in the province.
To protect the privacy of anyone involved, the RCMP said they will not discuss any aspect of the investigation or provide any more information at this time.
