For the next three Saturday mornings, a road that runs through Wascana Park will be closed to vehicles but open to people.
A pilot project between Run Regina and the Provincial Capital Commission will have Lakeshore Drive closed to traffic from Legislative Drive to Old Broad Street. This will be in effect for Aug. 7, 14 and 21 from 6 a.m. until noon.
“It’s just a great way to expand the space in the park for those people who wants a little bit more space to do their activities,” said Shawn Weimer, executive director of Run Regina.
“One of the things we’ve learned over the last year during the pandemic is sometimes space is something we all appreciate and (we) want to be able to have a little bit more space to ourselves.”
Weimer said Run Regina has discussed this proposal for many years with the park authority. In its agreement with the PCC, the group will have volunteers managing the barricades.
They will also be keeping an eye on the level of participation. Weimer said they will be counting users, documenting the action and reporting back to the PCC.
“We want to get some feedback from everybody in the park on that day. So I know the Provincial Capital Commission is going to be working to collect some of that feedback,” he said.
“And if it all goes positively … and people do enjoy this extra space, we’d really encourage them to to consider this as something they want to make as a regular type of Saturday or Sunday programming year round, potentially.”
In the last decade, Weimer has noticed the park becoming busier. He said he expected as much to happen as the city grows. On any given day, visitors are using the trails for everything from walking, running, pushing strollers, cycling to skateboarding.
“We’ve definitely seen that potentially spill into more people using those pathways in the park, and often will spill into the roadways on a normal day,” he said.
“This just gives them the opportunity to have that space to use with a little bit of extra safety built-in.”
