Saskpower will be extending its residential smart meter pilot until the end of the year due to a worldwide shortage in electronics production.
About 8,800 smart meters have already been installed in Saskatchewan homes.
The pilot asked for volunteers to test out smart meters in homes and SaskPower said a total of 20,000 smart meters are going to be installed as part of the test.
Global microchip supply issues, however, have slowed the arrival of the meters to Saskatchewan, causing SaskPower to lengthen their trial project until the end of 2021.
In a release Friday, Saskpower thanked all customers who have volunteered to be part of the pilot and said they are working hard to ensure those who signed up will receive a smart meter.
“Eventually, we will be able to provide a smart meter to every SaskPower customer,” read the release.
“We will continue to provide program updates as more information becomes available.”
