The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN) has announced the death of Black Lake Denesuline Nation Chief Archie Robillard.
In a news release, the FSIN said Robillard died on Thursday at the age of 60.
“Our family and community are mourning the loss of a great man,” his niece Simona Fern said. “He worked very hard for the betterment of his community and was always true to his word. He was a great leader with a strong faith in God.”
Robillard’s cause of death has not been released at this time.
“It is never easy to lose a great leader and we hold his family, friends and community up in warm prayer. Chief Robillard will be sorely missed and fondly remembered by many,” FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron said.
Black Lake Denesuline Nation, which is part of the Athabasca Health Authority went into lockdown on July 23 due to an increase in COVID cases.
The community is located about 1,200 kilometres northwest of Prince Albert.
