Saskatchewan is changing up its COVID-19 vaccine strategy for the second half of summer.
On Sunday, the last of the mass drive-thru clinics in the province closed and the provincial booking system was scaled back.
Immunizations going forward will mainly be done through walk-in and pop-up clinics at public events, as well as through participating pharmacies by appointment. Appointments booked online will continue for some smaller centres where pharmacy immunization is unavailable.
“This approach allows for outreach to communities where immunization is needed the most,” the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) said in a news release.
“While we’ve made great progress in immunizing Saskatchewan, we have much to do. We will continue to see COVID-19 transmission over the summer and into the fall, particularly among unvaccinated populations.”
The SHA noted variants of concern — such as the Delta variant now spreading across the province — continue to develop, and are more transmissible than the original strain of COVID-19, which makes them more dangerous.
The province reported 81 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, bringing the active caseload to 656.
