Gen Mary Simon has agreed to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s request to dissolve Parliament, triggering an election campaign amid a fourth wave of COVID-19 and over opposition accusations it is reckless and unnecessary. The Liberal party leader visited Rideau Hall on Sunday to ask Simon to pull the plug on the minority Parliament and send Canadians to the polls on Sept. 20. Jim Farney, political scientist and Regina Director of the Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy joins Gormley to discuss the election call.

11:00 – Following the withdrawal of American troops, the situation in Afghanistan is rapidly turning into a humanitarian crisis as the resurging Taliban take back the country and enact brutal vengeance on anyone who supported US and Canadian troops. Former diplomat Chris Alexander, who served as Canada’s first resident ambassador to the middle-eastern nation, says the Taliban are being supported directly by the government of Pakistan, and has called for sanctions from the international community. Alexander joins Gormley to tell us more about what’s happening in Afghanistan and his says a permanent ceasefire is impossible without strong sanctions against Pakistan.
