Saskatchewan saw a sell-out crowd during the first week of the CFL season, but COVID didn’t have to buy a ticket — even though it was in the stands.
According to the Saskatchewan Health Authority, nine cases of COVID have been linked to the Aug. 6 game against the B.C. Lions.
“Attendance during the infectious period did occur, and there is evidence of disease acquisition of others who may have come in contact with infectious individuals at the game. In addition, the cases were involved in activities, including shuttle rides, i.e. long duration commutes without mask use and the standing-only Pil Country area,” a statement from the health authority reads.
“If you were associated with any recent exposure alerts … the SHA asks you to keep track of where you were during and after these events, as well as your vaccine status and whether you were wearing a mask while in close contact with others.”
Within the health authority’s statement is the recommendation that all eligible individuals receive a COVID vaccine. It also asks that people to take precautions when choosing their activities, especially if they are feeling ill.
Additionally, it asked those in contact with a positive case to use masks when you’re unable to socially distance.
Over 33,000 were in attendance for the week one matchup. It was the largest mass gathering held in Canada since the pandemic began in March 2020.
During its contact tracing investigation, the health authority alerted the public of two possible COVID exposure locations: In Pil Country, the standing-room section, along with buses affiliated with Birmingham’s travelling to and from the game.
