Nearly 86 per cent of the new COVID-19 cases reported in Saskatchewan on Thursday were unvaccinated people.
According to the Ministry of Health, 245 of the 286 new cases weren’t vaccinated. There were 27 cases among people who were fully vaccinated and 14 among those who had received one dose or who had received their second dose within the past two weeks.
It was the first time in seven days that the number of new cases was under 300.
The seven-day average of new COVID- cases in Saskatchewan rose to 364, breaking the record for the fourth straight day.
The record of 321 initially was broken on Monday, when the average hit 346. After that, the average rose to 350 on Tuesday and 361 on Wednesday.
Hospitalizations due to COVID in Saskatchewan rose by three from Wednesday’s report to 184. That’s the most since there were 186 reported on April 29.
A resident of the Saskatoon region in the 20-to-39 age group died due to the virus. To date, 616 residents of the province have died due to the virus.
A look at the numbers
The new cases reported Thursday were in the Saskatoon (65), north-central (46), far northeast (25), southeast (25), northwest (19), Regina (12), southwest (11), far northwest (seven), northeast (seven), south-central (six), central-west (five), central-east (five) and far north-central (four) zones.
The hometowns of 49 cases are being determined.
According to the government, 88 of the new cases were in the 19-and-under age group.
Eight cases previously reported were deemed to be out-of-province residents and were removed from the province’s count. Saskatchewan now has reported 57,521 cases since March of 2020.
The Saskatoon region has had the most cases to date, with 13,888. The north region (13,305) and Regina areas (12,622) also have reported more than 10,000 cases to date.
The government said there were 192 recoveries, increasing the total so far to 53,489. There are 3,416 active cases.
The hospitalizations include 152 patients receiving inpatient care and 32 in intensive care.
There were 2,293 doses of COVID vaccine administered in the province, with 1,231 second doses.
To date, 704,188 people have received both doses and are considered fully vaccinated. So far, 1,493,099 doses have been delivered in Saskatchewan.
