Five more Saskatchewan residents have died as a result of COVID-19, increasing the province’s death toll due to the virus to 700 since the pandemic started.
The deaths reported Friday comprised three people between the ages of 60 and 79 and two aged 80 and over.
Two of the people lived in the northeast region of the province, with one in each of the Saskatoon, south-central and southeast regions.
It’s the 27th straight day at least one COVID-related death has been announced in the province.
A total of 128 people have died in Saskatchewan since the provincial government lifted public health measures on July 11.
Saskatchewan also set another record for COVID hospitalizations Friday, with 313. The previous mark of 311 was set Tuesday.
The current total includes 245 people receiving inpatient care and 68 people in intensive care. Of the total hospitalizations, 232 patients weren’t fully vaccinated against COVID.
There were 470 new cases and 365 recoveries announced Friday, hiking the active caseload to 4,770.
The Ministry of Health also reported 5,574 COVID vaccinations, the highest daily total since late August.
A look at the numbers
The new cases were recorded in the Saskatoon (85), Regina (83), north-central (48), northwest (44), southeast (37), south-central (33), central-east (32), southwest (23), far northwest (18), northeast (17), central-west (12), far northeast (11) and far north-central (one) zones.
The hometowns of 26 cases are pending.
The new cases were detected among 3,861 tests, for a test positivity rate of 12.2.
The latest infections comprised 385 people who weren’t vaccinated, 66 individuals who were fully vaccinated and 19 who were partially vaccinated.
Among the unvaccinated, 84 were under the age of 11 (the group that isn’t eligible to get COVID shots as yet), 68 were aged 20 to 29, and 65 were in their 30s.
To date, Saskatchewan has recorded 67,810 cases and 62,340 recoveries.
The seven-day average of new cases dropped by eight to 479.
The reported vaccinations included 3,144 first doses and 2,430 second shots. So far, more than 1.56 million shots have been given in Saskatchewan and 736,590 people are considered fully vaccinated.
