The vaccine policy for the Regina Police Service (RPS) has been in effect for about a week now.
As of Oct. 4, employees of the police force had to show proof of vaccination or face rapid testing.
“At this time, we can say almost 90 per cent of our employees, both civilian and sworn, have been fully vaccinated, with two more patrol shifts starting their work week this weekend,” says a news release from RPS.
“The percentage of RPS employees who are fully vaccinated is significantly higher than the percentage of the province’s population who are fully vaccinated.”
RPS says the policy was implemented after consultation with the police union, as well as co-ordination with other police services and employers.
“Extensive legal consultation was part of this process to ensure compliance with the law and conformity with other employers across the province,” the release says.
Workers at police headquarters are required to wear masks in meetings and when moving around the building outside their immediate work area.
Members of the public visiting headquarters must still answer COVID-related questions and to wear a mask.
As well, the RPS says officers who contact the public will still practise distancing, masking and use of personal protective equipment.
