Anyone with an opinion on adding electric scooters to public roads is being asked to let SGI know their thoughts.
With more e-scooters popping up in the province, SGI plans to also meet with municipalities, law enforcement, safety organizations and business owners to hear their thoughts about possible changes to provincial legislation.
Electric scooters are currently classified as unlicensed motor vehicles, which aren’t allowed to be driven on any public roads in the province, with certain exceptions, under the Traffic Safety Act.
Discussions about the topic would contribute to deciding where and when e-scooters should be allowed to be used.
Businesses, organizations and individuals who want to add their input to the discussion can send an email to autofundpartnershipsupport@sgi.sk.ca before Nov. 1, 2o21.
Any decision in favour of e-scooters legally operating on public roads would require an amendment to the Traffic Safety Act. SGI will gather feedback throughout the fall to inform whether they make any recommendations to the government for legislative changes.
Changes to legislation would also require issues of safety — particularly for on-road use — and factors like inexperienced drivers, speeds and equipment be addressed.
