Dr. Saqib Shahab — Saskatchewan’s chief medical health officer — and Premier Scott Moe were the individuals allegedly threatened in an email sent by a 38-year-old Regina man.
The man was charged by the Regina Police Service with two counts of uttering threats.
In an emailed statement Tuesday, Moe condemned the message.
“No one in our province should be subjected to threats, but particularly not Dr. Shahab who has worked tirelessly to serve the people of our province,” Moe wrote.
“Thank you to the Regina Police Service for their actions in response to this threat, and thank you to Dr. Shahab for his continued efforts to serve Saskatchewan people.”
In a media release Monday, Regina police said they got a call Oct. 4 about a threatening email that was received by a number of people.
“The e-mail allegedly contained non-specific threats to the lives and safety of government officials and law enforcement, but also mentioned two Saskatchewan individuals by name,” the police release said.
Police later clarified that Moe was one of the subjects of the threats. On Tuesday, Moe’s office confirmed the other person threatened was Shahab.
Police said the message was sent from a fake account. After investigating, police executed a search warrant on a home in south Regina on Friday and identified a potential suspect, who was later arrested.
The man was released on conditions and is to make his first court appearance on Dec. 1.
