Active cases of COVID-19 in Saskatchewan dropped again Tuesday, but the province continues to lead the nation in active case rate.
There were 495 recoveries, 271 new cases and eight deaths reported, lowering the active caseload to 3,434. That’s the lowest that number has been since it was 3,416 on Sept. 9.
However, as of Monday, Saskatchewan’s rate of active cases was 311, the highest among the provinces. Alberta was next at 278.
The latest deaths due to COVID in Saskatchewan comprised four people in the 60-to-79 age group, three in the 80-and-over age range and one in the 40-to-59 age group.
There were two fatalities in each of the northwest and southwest areas and one in each of the Regina, Saskatoon, north-central and southeast zones.
Saskatchewan has reported at least one COVID-related death in 45 straight days, with 183 people dying due to the virus in that span. To date, 793 Saskatchewan residents have died as a result of COVID, including 40 in the past week.
A look at the numbers
The cases reported Tuesday were in the Saskatoon (82), Regina (35), north-central (32), northwest (30), central-east (22), far northeast (11), southeast (10), far northwest (nine), southwest (six), northeast (three), south-central (two) and central-west (one) zones. The hometowns of 28 cases are pending.
The new infections were detected in 2,092 tests for a test positivity rate of 12.9.
The new cases included 207 people who weren’t vaccinated, 54 who were fully vaccinated and 10 who were partially vaccinated. Among the unvaccinated cases were 71 kids under the age of 11, who currently aren’t eligible to be vaccinated.
Hospitalizations due to COVID remained unchanged from Monday’s report, at 335. ICU admissions dropped by two, to 83.
According to the Ministry of Health, 251 of the COVID patients in Saskatchewan health-care facilities weren’t fully vaccinated.
Vaccination update
There were 1,188 doses of COVID vaccine administered, including 732 second doses.
So far, more than 1.6 million vaccinations have been done in the province, and 768,915 people are considered fully vaccinated with two doses. As well, 48,800 third shots and 2,158 fourth shots have been given.
The ministry said 84 per cent of Saskatchewan residents aged 12 and over have received their first dose and 75 per cent are fully vaccinated.
