A report of a car driving with its roof torn off ultimately led to impaired driving charges against a Meadow Lake woman whom police say was four times over the legal limit.
In a media release Friday, the RCMP said officers from the Glaslyn detachment got a call Thursday at about 5 p.m., that a car had attempted to pass another vehicle on the shoulder of Highway 4 south of Meadow Lake.
The car attempting the pass hit a semi hauling a trailer that was turning in front of the car, ripping off the car’s roof. Even so, the vehicle kept going.
Around the same time, the Meadow Lake RCMP got a report of a car heading north on Highway 4 with a damaged windshield and no roof. Officers found the car and tried to pull it over, but the driver kept going into Meadow Lake.
Police followed the car, which drove through the town before stopping at a house. After making sure the woman wasn’t hurt, officers took her to the detachment, where they found her blood-alcohol content was four times more than the legal limit of .08.
A search of the car found six empty alcohol bottles and one that was half full.
“The state of this car speaks for itself,” Staff Sgt. Ryan How, commander of the Meadow Lake detachment, said in the release.
“I’ve responded to many impaired driving investigations as a police officer. This incident could have been tragic. I’m thankful in this instance no one — not the individual or the members of the public travelling on the same roadway — was injured.”
A 27-year-old woman was charged with impaired operation of a conveyance, impaired operation while over the legal limit, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from police and failure to stop after an accident.
