The number of active COVID-19 cases in Saskatchewan fell below 2,000 for the first time in more than two months Monday.
In its daily update, the Ministry of Health said there were 1,950 active cases in the province. The last time the number was under 2,000 was Aug. 28, when it was 1,987.
The active caseload has fallen nearly 60 per cent in the past month. On Oct. 2, there were 4,824 active cases in the province.
However, as of Friday, Saskatchewan still had the highest rate of active cases among Canadian provinces, at 201. Alberta was second at 184.
The ministry reported 128 new cases, 298 recoveries and three deaths.
The latest fatalities comprised two people in the 80-and-over age group and one person between the ages of 60 and 79. Two people lived in the Saskatoon region, while one resided in the southeast.
To date, 854 Saskatchewan residents have died as a result of COVID-19.
There were 222 COVID patients in the province’s hospitals, with 167 receiving inpatient care and 55 in intensive care. There also are 26 Saskatchewan ICU patients being treated in Ontario hospitals.
Saskatchewan’s seven-day average of new COVID cases is 188, or 15.6 per 100,000 population.
A look at the numbers
The new cases were reported in the Saskatoon (30), Regina (26), central-east (17), north-central (15), northwest (10), northeast (seven), southeast (seven), southwest (four), far northeast (three), central-west (two) and south-central (one) zones.
The hometowns of six new cases are still being identified.
The total comprised 105 people who weren’t vaccinated, 19 individuals who were fully vaccinated and four who were partially vaccinated.
The unvaccinated group included 40 kids under the age of 11, the only age group that isn’t eligible to get immunized against the virus.
The latest new cases were detected in 1,361 tests for a test positivity rate of 9.4.
To date, there have been 77,793 cases reported in Saskatchewan along with 74,989 recoveries.
Of the COVID patients in hospitals, 153 weren’t fully vaccinated.
The 2,068 doses of COVID vaccine administered in Saskatchewan comprised 546 first shots and 1,522 second jabs.
So far, 797,697 people have received two shots and are considered fully vaccinated. There have been 1,669,808 doses administered overall.
