8:30 – Saskatchewan’s backlog of surgeries has grown by between 34,000 and 35,000 since the start of the pandemic, with as many as 1,000 being added every week. According to Dr. Haissam Haddad, Professor and Provincial Head of Medicine at the U of S, throwing money at the problem and trying to recruit more staff may not be viable solutions. He says the Province needs to work to prevent a fifth wave of COVID first and foremost, and should prepare a detailed plan that would allow all our surgical facilities to operate at 100% capacity until the backlog is cleared. Haddad said Saskatchewan should also consider new solutions like portable ORs to boost capacity further. Haddad joins Gormley to share his thoughts on Saskatchewan’s massive surgical backlog.
