The Regina Police Service is warning residents about an attempted fraud by a door-to-door canvasser in the Glencairn neighbourhood.
Police said a woman went to a house Wednesday at about 8 p.m., and said she was from a well-known goodwill organization. She told the people in the home the organization was taking donations by credit cards instead of cash because of COVID-19.
“The female made many references to neighbours in the area, and made convincing claims about the legitimacy of her canvassing and stressed the importance of the organization’s mandates,” the police said in a media release.
One of the residents said they would share their credit card number, but another person stepped in and the woman left. The residents then checked the organization’s website and discovered the organization doesn’t send representatives door to door.
Police described the woman as being around 25 years of age with dark hair and a heavy build, and wearing a black hoodie and leggings. She was wearing a laminated name tag with a logo.
The Regina Police Service is asking people who think they may have been victimized by the scam to call 306-777-6500, their local law enforcement agency, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
