A man who killed his father in Regina in May of 2020 has been sentenced to life in prison without any chance of parole for 11 years.
Joseph Delaney Oakes, 32, initially was charged with first-degree murder in the death of 54-year-old Jones Raymond Oakes.
The younger man pleaded guilty in August to second-degree murder, a plea that was accepted by the court in October. He was sentenced Friday in Regina Court of Queen’s Bench.
A charge of assault with a weapon was stayed.
Oakes can apply for parole 11 years from the day he was arrested — May 22, 2020. During Friday’s hearing, he also was given a 10-year firearms ban and was ordered to provide a DNA sample.
Regina police were called to a home on Fisher Street at about 8:20 a.m., on May 22. When officers arrived, they saw a man running from the house, but they managed to detain him.
According to a media release at the time, police found an injured woman who directed police inside the house. There, they found a man who had suffered serious injuries.
The officers performed CPR on the man until paramedics arrived and told them the man was dead.
Oakes subsequently was charged with murder. It was Regina’s seventh homicide of 2020.
