Saskatchewan reported Wednesday its highest total of new COVID-19 cases in five days.
There were 81 new cases announced by the Ministry of Health, the most since 108 were reported on Friday.
Over the previous seven days, the province had a rate of 43 new cases per 100,000 people. Saskatchewan’s rate, which used to be the highest among the province, is now sixth behind those of Quebec (90), Manitoba (67), New Brunswick (65), Alberta (50) and B.C. (46).
Saskatchewan also reported 61 recoveries and one death Wednesday. A person in the 80-and-over age group who lived in the central-east region is the 927th resident of the province to die due to COVID.
The number of COVID patients in Saskatchewan hospitals remained steady from Tuesday’s report at 133. There were 35 patients in intensive care, a decrease of two from the previous day.
There were four Saskatchewan residents being treated in Ontario.
A look at the numbers
The new cases were reported in the southeast (31), north-central (nine), central-east (eight), Regina (eight), Saskatoon (six), northwest (six), far northeast (three), southwest (three), south-central (two), far northwest (one) and central-west (one) zones.
The hometowns of three cases are still being determined.
The new cases comprised 55 people who weren’t vaccinated, 24 individuals who were considered fully vaccinated and two people who were partially vaccinated.
The unvaccinated number included four kids under the age of five and 22 children between the ages of five and 11.
The seven-day average of new cases in Saskatchewan dropped to 72, or 6.0 per 100,000 people.
To date, there have been 81,074 cases reported in the province and 79,412 recoveries.
The number of active cases increased by 20 from Tuesday’s update to 735. That included 115 active cases in Saskatoon (a 74 per cent decrease from Nov. 1) and 109 in Regina (a 71 per cent drop over the past month).
The province said 5,430 vaccinations were done in the latest reporting period, with 4,733 first shots and 697 second shots.
To date, more than 1.74 million doses have been administered in Saskatchewan, including 836,064 second shots.
Since last Wednesday — the day they became eligible to be vaccinated — 23,440 kids aged five to 11 have got their first jabs.
