Saskatchewan has identified 16,425 cases of a COVID-19 variant of concern as of Wednesday.
There have been 8,808 cases of the Delta variant, 7,123 cases of the Alpha strain, 484 cases of the Gamma variant and 10 of the Beta strain.
As Premier Scott Moe revealed first on Gormley on Wednesday, four individuals from a household with a history of travel to southern Africa have tested positive for a variant of concern. Those tests now will undergo whole genome sequencing to determine if they’re the new Omicron variant.
The Ministry of Health also reported 48 new COVID cases on Wednesday along with 50 recoveries and two deaths.
The latest fatalities are a person in the 40-to-59 age group and an individual from the 60-to-79 age range. They lived in the central-east and southeast regions.
To date, 936 Saskatchewan residents have died due to COVID.
One person from this province was still being treated in an Ontario intensive care unit after another individual was returned to Saskatchewan.
A look at the numbers
The new cases were reported in the Saskatoon (12), Regina (eight), central-east (eight), northwest (six), southeast (six), north-central (three), south-central (two) and far northwest (one) regions. The hometowns of two cases were still being determined.
There were 27 unvaccinated people among the new cases, including 13 children between the ages of five and 11. There also were 20 new cases among people who were considered fully vaccinated and one individual who was partially vaccinated.
The seven-day average of new COVID cases was 62, or 5.2 per 100,000 people.
To date, there have been 81,510 cases reported in Saskatchewan along with 79,965 recoveries.
There were 609 active cases reported Wednesday, including 124 in the Saskatoon region and 93 in the Regina area.
COVID-related hospitalizations in Saskatchewan totalled 124, with 31 of those in ICU. The total number of hospitalizations was the lowest it has been since Aug. 30, when there were 111 people in Saskatchewan health-care facilities.
There were 2,260 COVID vaccinations done in the province in the latest reporting period, including 1,594 first shots and 666 second shots.
To date, more than 1.76 million doses have been administered in Saskatchewan, with 841,462 of those second shots.
