It’s a chance to take part in the “giving season.”
On Saturday, the Salvation Army and 980 CJME will hold the toy dropoff day for Santas Anonymous.
The annual campaign collects toys and gifts for kids in families that are asking for a bit of help at Christmastime.
In previous years there have been wrap days, but because of COVID-19, this year, it’s again a day for people to drive up and drop off their toys at the distribution centre.
“It’s really starting to shape up. We’re getting ready to serve lots of families,” said Kristen Gray with the Salvation Army.
“We’re looking forward to the toy drive (Saturday) and getting some more toys loaded in there so that we can be all set up and ready for serving those families next week.”
The community is still in the middle of a pandemic and Gray said that has had an impact on families.
“We’re seeing a significant increase in the need — about 25 per cent higher than last year. So we have about 1,900 families that have asked for a little help this year,” explained Gray.
This year there’s a bit of a change. Gray said organizers won’t be handing over already-chosen, pre-wrapped toys to parents.
“They’re going to have an opportunity to come in and choose toys for their family to meet the needs of their child, to get their child a gift that they perhaps really want this year,” Gray said.
“We’re looking forward to serving a little differently — giving some dignity to those families who have to ask for help and being able to allow them this opportunity this year.”
The dropoff event is being held between noon and 4 p.m., at 1825 Victoria Ave. — the old YMCA building near the Home Depot in the east end.
