Regina Fire and Protective Services is reminding people to stay off the ice on bodies of water in the city.
In a media release Tuesday, the fire department said all bodies of water — including Wascana Lake, Wascana Creek, storm channels and detention ponds — aren’t yet covered by thick enough ice.
“Inconsistent air temperatures may cause the ice to thaw and freeze, making the ice surfaces unpredictable and dangerous,” the release said. “Residents should not walk, ski, skate or play on any body of water. Parents and guardians are asked to remind children about this important safety rule.”
People also should keep their dogs on a leash. If a pet goes through the ice, the fire department said people shouldn’t try to rescue the animal since they’ll be putting themselves and others in danger.
Residents looking for a place to skate should visit Regina.ca/rinks for a complete list of indoor and outdoor skating rinks in the city.
Anyone who sees people — especially children — close to thin ice is urged to call the Regina Police Service at 306-777-6500. In an emergency involving people or pets, call 9-1-1.
