In 2021, Regina Crime Stoppers saw huge increases when it came to arrests, charges and cases cleared as a result of tips from the public compared to past years.
There was a 225 per cent increase in tips leading to an arrest in 2021 compared to the year before. There also was a 266 per cent increase in charges as a result of those arrests.
That was accomplished despite receiving fewer tips than any of the previous four years.
The inspector for the Regina Police Service’s North District, Shawn Fenwick, says the quality of tips that are being sent in, along with the work done by Crime Stoppers as a whole, resulted in a lot of success in 2021.
“Some efficiencies that have been created in the past number of months led to those numbers,” Fenwick said. “People want to do the right thing for their community and their city.”
There were 52 arrests made as well as 154 charges as a result, compared to 16 arrests and 42 charges in 2020.
The anonymous service received 888 tips, a 21 per cent decrease from 2020’s total of 1,125.
In total, there was $8,345 in rewards approved for people after tips led to an arrest.
2021 also saw the seizure of $173,060 in property, cash and drugs. That was the largest amount since 2018.
