Canada’s women’s hockey team opened the Winter Olympics in Beijing with a 12-1 victory over Switzerland on Wednesday night.
Natalie Spooner had two goals and three assists for Canada, which got a goal and four helpers from Claire Thompson.
Blayre Turnbull (two goals, two assists) and Rebecca Johnston (one goal, three helpers) each had four-point games for the Canadians, while Sarah Fillier added two goals and an assist.
Laura Stacey also scored twice for Canada, which got its other goals from Ashton Bell and Erin Ambrose. Saskatoon’s Emily Clark was held off the scoresheet.
Ann-Renee Desbiens stopped 14 shots in the Canadian goal. The winners fired 70 shots at the Swiss net.
Canada is to play Finland on Friday.
In mixed curling, the Canadian team of Rachel Homan and John Morris had a 1-1 record after their first two games.
In Canada’s opener Wednesday night, Jennifer Dodds and Bruce Mouat of Great Britain scored two in the seventh and stole one in the eighth to down Homan and Morris 6-4.
Early Thursday, the Canadians scored one in the eighth end to post a 7-6 victory over the Norwegian duo of Kristin Skaslien and Magnus Nedregotten.
Canada is to play Switzerland and China later Thursday.
Canada’s Mikael Kingsbury finished first in the first qualifying session in the men’s moguls and advanced to the final. The second preliminary session is set for Saturday.
In the women’s moguls, Canada’s Justine Dufour-Lapointe finished 10th in the first qualification session to reach the final. More Canadians — including Dufour-Lapointe’s sister, Chloe — could still advance out of the second qualifying event.
