Canada’s Meryeta O’Dine regained her composure — and her footing — to help Canada win its 13th medal of the Beijing Winter Olympics on Saturday.
The product of Prince George, B.C., was knocked to the ground in the mixed team snowboard cross big final after Italy’s Caterina Carpano soared over a jump and landed on the Canadian’s back.
O’Dine scrambled to her feet and got to the finish line before Carpano, giving O’Dine and teammate Eliot Grondin (Sainte-Marie, Que.) the bronze medal in the event’s Olympic debut.
It was the second medal of the Games for both Canadians. Grondin won silver in the men’s snowboard cross and O’Dine earned a bronze in the women’s final.
Canada has one gold, four silver and eight bronze medals at the Games and is tied with the Russian team in total medals. Only Norway (17), Germany (14) and Austria (14) have more.
The Canada 2 team of Liam Moffatt (Truro, N.S.) and Tess Critchlow (Big White, B.C.) finished third in their quarterfinal and didn’t advance to the final.
