A woman who claimed she had been robbed on a Regina street on Saturday now is facing a charge of public mischief for making the whole thing up.
The Regina Police Service said Wednesday the 27-year-old woman also had been charged with theft under $5,000 for a shoplifting incident.
According to police, the woman told police on Saturday she had been robbed by a man and a woman and gave officers detailed descriptions of the suspects.
“Police began an investigation, which included a news release asking for information from the public,” the RPS said in a release Wednesday. “Now after thorough investigation, police have determined the original report was false. The robbery never happened.”
The woman also was charged in connection with a shoplifting incident that happened Friday at a business in the 2000 block of Prince of Wales Drive. Police said loss prevention officers detained the suspect, but let her go after she claimed a family emergency.
Investigation into that incident determined the suspect was the same person who told police she had been robbed.
The woman was released on an undertaking and is to appear in Regina Provincial Court on April 5.
