Electric vehicle owners in Saskatchewan are getting a boost from SaskPower.
The company announced Friday it’s investing about $2 million in the SaskPower Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Program, which will help businesses and organizations install around 20 electric vehicle fast-charging stations along major highways in the province.
The program started accepting applications on Friday.
According to SaskPower, Saskatchewan residents owned about 1,200 electric vehicles (EVs) at the end of 2021.
“Though there are still a relatively small number of EVs on Saskatchewan roads, it’s expected that this market will grow,” Troy King, acting president and CEO of SaskPower, said in a media release.
“It’s important to prepare for a future where more customers drive electric vehicles and expect the infrastructure to be in place to do so.”
The Crown corporation said the program will focus on roads where EV fast-charging stations are lacking, including highways 11 and 16 as well as some secondary highways that connect major cities.
Businesses or organizations that want to build a station will have to help fund it and will be responsible for its construction and subsequent operation.
Anyone who’s interested in building a charging station is urged to contact SaskPower to schedule a pre-application meeting. More information is available here.
