The RCMP provided more details Wednesday into the raids Saturday that led to a shootout in Waseca in which a suspect was killed and a Mountie was wounded.
According to a media release, the Saskatoon Police Service has determined the injured officer was shot in the head. The officer was treated in hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, but the RCMP said it couldn’t provide an update on the officer’s condition.
The Mountie is a member of the RCMP’s Police Dog Services and, along with other members of the Critical Incident Response Team, was helping to execute a search warrant at a commercial property in Waseca.
A 33-year-old man from the Lloydminster area was killed in the shootout with the RCMP. Three other people left the building and were arrested.
In addition to the police operation in Waseca, the Mounties also executed two search warrants in Lloydminster on Saturday as part of an investigation that started in October into the trafficking of drugs and weapons in west-central Saskatchewan.
The RCMP said the searches turned up nine guns, multiple prohibited weapons, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, hard body armour, approximately four ounces of suspected cocaine, about four ounces of suspected methamphetamine, around 250 millilitres of GHB, and two stolen vehicles.
A 25-year-old woman and an 18-year-old man, both from Lloydminster, were charged as a result of that search.
