More than 400 people are to get help from the Saskatchewan government in hopes of helping them find work.
The provincial government announced Tuesday it was putting $4 million into the Economic Recovery Work Experience Initiative, a program aiming to connect as many as 465 job seekers with employers.
The initiative is a one-time COVID-19 pandemic recovery that the government said will create paid work experiences of up to 16 weeks for people to gain practical skills in sectors such as hospitality, agriculture, retail services, health and childcare.
“The Economic Recovery Work Experience Initiative will help address the gap of skilled labour shortages in key priority sectors,” Immigration and Career Training Minister Jeremy Harrison said in a media release.
“This funding will create a stronger Saskatchewan by providing employers with the skilled workforce they need and by empowering job seekers to fully participate in our economy as we emerge from the pandemic.”
The program will be funded through the Canada-Saskatchewan Labour Market Transfer Agreements.
Participants must be seeking jobs through the SaskJobs Career Services or an approved service provider. They must be at least 18 years of age, legally entitled to work in Saskatchewan, facing job search and skills-related barriers to finding work, and unemployed or underemployed (meaning they’re working less than 20 hours per week).
Employers are to receive funds for wages, including up to $6,000 per each work experience participant, with 100 per cent of the minimum hourly wage to be covered in the first month, 80 per cent in the second month, and 60 per cent in the third and fourth months.
