Anyone who gets an email from SaskPower asking for payment should be wary.
The Crown corporation said Thursday an email scam is making the rounds targeting SaskPower customers.
In the email — which is sent from an email address that isn’t associated with SaskPower — the scammers tell customers there’s an issue processing their SaskPower bill. They’re told to log in to MySaskPower to make a payment immediately.
Trouble is, the login page is fake. When they sign in, customers are told to enter their credit card information.
“Any customer who has followed this link and submitted their credit card information should contact their credit card issuer immediately,” SaskPower said in a media release. “They should also call SaskPower Customer Service (888-757-6937) immediately to have their MySaskPower credentials reset.”
SaskPower also offered some suggestions to help customers avoid being scammed, saying they should:
- Always check the “from” email address when they receive an email claiming to be from SaskPower and ensure it is actually from SaskPower;
- Always check the links in emails claiming to be from SaskPower and ensure they point to a legitimate SaskPower website;
- Routinely change their password and never reuse a password from a different site; and,
- Call SaskPower customer service to confirm the email was legitimate.
