One Regina dog has a new leash on life thanks to Regina Fire and Protective Services.
On Wednesday at about 4:45 p.m., firefighters got a call about a dog that was stranded on the ice at the east end of Wascana Lake.
“The dog got away from the owner and ventured out on the lake,” Fire Chief Layne Jackson said in a media release. “Fortunately, the owner did not attempt to go out on their own, which is the right thing to do and called 9-1-1.”
A team used a rescue sled to go onto the ice to fetch the dog. By 5:15 p.m., the crew and the dog were back on land and the dog was reunited with its owner.
“Residents are reminded to keep dogs on a leash when walking close to bodies of water,” the fire department said in its release. “If your pet becomes stranded in a lake, creek, storm channel, or detention pond, do not attempt a rescue as you will be putting yourself and others in danger.”
Anyone who sees people or pets near thin ice or bodies of water should call the Regina Police Service at 306-777-6500. If it’s an emergency, people should call 9-1-1.
