For the second time in program history, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies took home the bronze medal at the 2022 Cavendish Farms U Sports women’s hockey championship.
After being shut out in Saturday’s semifinal by the Concordia Stingers, it was the Huskies slamming the door on the New Brunswick Reds on Sunday in a 2-0 victory.
Kendra Zuchotzki opened the scoring in the first period on a one-timer that gave the Huskies a crucial lead.
In the second frame, Jasper Desmarais used a perfect shot to beat the Reds netminder over the glove, making it 2-0 Huskies.
Huskies goaltender Camryn Drever was as sharp as ever, stopping all 17 shots she faced to earn her second shutout of the tournament.
It’s the first time on the podium for the Huskies since 2014 when the team won bronze.
Fifth-year forwards Abby Shirley and captain Bailee Bourassa capped off their final game in a Huskies uniform in style.
The two players were the only ones with any experience at nationals, after coming up short four years ago in 2018 in the bronze-medal game.
Looking forward to next year, the Huskies will bring back the majority of their roster as they look to make it back to the national stage for a second straight season.
