The University of Regina is set to take care of some of its international students.
The school announced Thursday the creation of Project Resilience, which it described in a media release as a fund “to support students affected by war or other forms of political violence in their home countries so they may continue their studies at the U of R.”
The fund will create scholarships, provide emergency funds and deliver other supports for the students and their families.
Applications are being accepted by the Student Awards and Financial Aid office.
“The situation in Ukraine has highlighted once again how abruptly war can devastate students and families from countries around the world through no fault of their own, disrupting their homes, their lives, and their academic studies,” Dr. Jeff Keshen, the U of R’s president and vice-chancellor, said in the release.
“Through Project Resilience, the University of Regina is acknowledging the suffering and hardship experienced by families in war zones, and working to alleviate it by providing financial assistance to students from these countries who come to study here.”
Students who qualify will get scholarships that are equal to their tuition and course fees as well as $1,000 a year to cover the cost of books and supplies. They’ll also get access to counselling, Student Wellness Centre services, Mental Health Hub resources, academic counselling and UR International supports.
The fund will give out four packages each year and they’ll be renewable for three more years. That means that within a few years, up to 16 students will be getting support at any given time.
“The University of Regina has once again shown that it is not only an international university, but a home for all,” Zohra Zahir, a graduate student from Afghanistan who is studying biology in the Faculty of Science, said in the release.
“I hope this scholarship will help knowledge-hungry students in war-torn countries pursue their dreams and the hope of a better world, as universities play an important role in shaping society.”
