A 28-year-old Saskatoon woman charged with driving while high on THC and causing a girl’s death made her first court appearance Tuesday in Saskatoon Provincial Court.
Taylor Ashley Kennedy spoke with a judge via telephone Tuesday afternoon. She was asked whether she’d obtained a lawyer and replied she had spoken with Legal Aid.
Her appearance was brief and her case was adjourned to April 26 at 9:30 a.m. for a plea.
Kennedy is accused of killing nine-year-old Bayleigh Maurice last Sept. 9 as the girl rode her scooter to school in the 600 block of 33rd Street West.
Maurice was in a marked crosswalk when she was hit by a pickup truck.
The girl’s mother, Rochelle Dubois, and at least a dozen supporters were also in the courtroom Tuesday. When asked about the case outside of court, Dubois offered a simple “No comment.”
Kennedy is the first person in Saskatchewan to face a THC-related impaired driving causing death charge.
