The heavy downpour in Regina on Friday had one business owner annoyed with a particular intersection.
Tiro Mthembu is co-owner of The Hampton Hub restaurant located just off the corner of Montreal Street and 15th Avenue.
Mthembu said the intersection floods every time it rains, and added nothing has been done to resolve the issue over the years.
“This one in particular, every single time it rains, it floods,” he said.
In response to the intersection flooding yet again on Friday, Mthembu decided to break out the beach gear and take a picture to show the public just how bad the intersection is for flooding.
“A friend of ours in the neighbourhood (said) maybe we should humorlessly make fun of the situation that happens every single time it rains in our neighbourhood,” Mthembu said. “We just decided, ‘Every time it happens, why don’t we just start acting like we have our own lakefront property?’ ”
While Mthembu said his business is impacted every single time it floods, he feels it creates a major roadblock for those commuting past the intersection and going to the General Hospital.
“It’s not so much about our business, it’s more about neighbourhood safety and having access to the hospital,” he said. “What we’d like to see is a permanent solution.
“The city came and ripped up the entire 15th (Avenue) two years ago and you think they would’ve been able to address this issue then. It’s a safety concern.”
Another business owner said they’ve nicknamed the intersection of Montreal and 15th “Lake Montreal.”
Mthembu said he will continue to bring awareness to the situation until it gets resolved.
“Going out if it rains like that, we’ll get out our swim trunks again and get out our beach volleyball and have fun with it,” he said.
