Driving without a valid licence can lead to heavy fines, higher insurance costs or even the loss of your vehicle, but according to new stats from SGI, hundreds of drivers in Saskatchewan aren’t getting that message.
Last month saw 623 people caught driving with suspended licences, SGI reported, along with 695 people caught driving unregistered vehicles.
During April, police around the province also caught 337 impaired drivers, leading to 247 criminal charges. Distracted driving charges totalled 535 in April, including 355 tickets for using a mobile device while behind the wheel.
Police also issued 5,750 tickets for speeding or aggressive driving in April, SGI said, and 259 people were caught driving without a seatbelt, wearing a seatbelt incorrectly, or not having children properly restrained.
The insurer reminded everyone to stay safe during the upcoming long weekend, when the risk of a crash increases.
“If you’re heading somewhere for May long, please drive sober, avoid distractions, obey posted speed limits, and buckle up,” SGI spokesperson Tyler McMurchy said in a statement.
“And, of course, make sure you only drive if you’re legally allowed to do so, and your vehicle is registered.”
