A police dog was hurt during a tense arrest in Regina on Thursday morning.
In a news release, police said officers were going to arrest a man accused of committing a sexual assault on May 9.
They saw him leave a house in the 600 block of Garnet Street just after 8 a.m.
When a canine officer told the man to stop, he ran away instead. So the officer sent the police dog after the suspect.
The dog bit the suspect on his leg, but police said the dog “broke away unexpectedly” and the man kept running.
Police didn’t say how, but the dog was seriously hurt at about that time. Officers managed to tackle and arrest the 34-year-old man.
They immediately took the dog to a veterinarian with serious injuries. According to police, Police Service Dog Ralph is expected to be fine.
