What started as an investigation into an alleged assault ended with a call to the Regina police bomb squad.
According to the Regina Police Service, officers were sent Sunday at about 7:45 a.m., to the 1000 block of Angus Street for a report of a man threatening a woman with a knife.
Officers who arrived at the scene arrested the man and seized a knife, as well as what they initially thought was an improvised firearm.
“Further investigation led to consultation with a member of the Explosives Disposal Unit and evidence that the object was a potential explosive device,” police said in a media release.
The 30-year-old man was charged with unlawful possession of explosives, possession of a weapon (the knife) for a purpose dangerous to the public peace, carrying a concealed weapon (the knife), and assault with a weapon.
He made his first court appearance Monday.
