Pet Food Week in Saskatchewan has come to an end after another successful year.
Laura Zmud, family ties co-ordinator with the Saskatchewan SPCA, was collecting donations at the Michael’s Your Independent Grocer in Saskatoon on Saturday afternoon.
“We are collecting pet food donations for our Saskatchewan pet food bank,” Zmud said.
People donated both cash and real dog food items to the cause.
“People have been very generous, which is fantastic,” Zmud said. “We do have a matching donation of $5,000. If anyone (was to) donate money, their donation (was) instantly doubled.”
The Saskatchewan SPCA gives back to different spots all around the province.
“We run a provincial pet food bank. We have 10 distribution locations all across the province,” Zmud said.
“We partner with human food banks and we are able to provide them with pet food banks so families that access food bank service can also access pet food for their animal.”
The numbers speak for themselves when it comes to feeding dogs in the province.
Since the program launched two years ago, the Saskatchewan SPCA Pet Food Bank has distributed enough pet food to fill more than 37,000 bowls.
According to a release, food banks are located in Fort Qu’Appelle, Maple Creek, Melville, Moosomin, Nipawin, Rosetown, Rosthern, Saskatoon and Swift Current.
